The Sixth Annual Open House New York event takes place this weekend (Saturday and Sunday), with 39 spaces open to Brooklyn eyes. Up this year: the brand new Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment, a green building by Andrew Freireich Company; the Pratt Institute’s 1898 neo-Georgian Caroline Ladd mansion; Tom Otterness‘s sculpture studio (he’s the fella who made those funny round metal creatures in the 14th Street L station); and historic control tower at Floyd Bennett Field. It’s best to plan ahead, as space is limited at some locations, like the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, which will be running a limited number of tours on Sunday of its 13 Tiffany stained glass windows and the 300-foot mural created by a Pratt student in the 1970s (above). Reservations for this tour can be made by emailing lrogers AT lapcbrooklyn DOT org. You should also sign up early for the bus tours of the Brooklyn Navy Yard that will be running twice a day over the weekend.
