Preservation and advocacy efforts in Downtown Brooklyn will get a boost from the Historic Districts Council this year, with inclusion on the organization’s annual Six to Celebrate list.

The city-wide preservation nonprofit will work with the Downtown Brooklyn Landmarks Coalition and support their efforts to promote landmark designation for significant sites in the changing neighborhood.

Local groups nominate neighborhoods whose history and architecture they believe makes the spots deserving of protection. Other areas included on the list this year are Rose Hill/Kip’s Bay and Washington Heights in Manhattan, Bayside in Queens, and Pelham Parkway and Allerton in The Bronx.

HDC launched the Six to Celebrate initiative in 2011. Each year the chosen groups receive hands-on assistance from HDC on strategic planning, advocacy, and outreach. If you are curious about past Six to Celebrate designations or how to nominate your own neighborhood, you can check out all the details on the program website.
