building
We’re curious about this building at the corner of Grace Court Alley and Hicks Street in Brooklyn Heights. It feels somewhere in between a carriage house and an institutional building, however the fact that masonry and window size and shape match exactly that of the house next door suggest otherwise. (Clearly the main entrance was once on the alley.) Whatever its original use, its clearly getting a full tune-up now. Does anyone know anything about it? GMAP

  1. It’s a lovely little home that probably used to be part of the matching carriage houses at 2 Grace Court Alley and 4 Grace Court Alley.

I’m fairly sure it’s owned by an elderly lady who’s husband was a very big deal (publisher? editor in chief?) at the Wall Street Journal for many decades. I think he passed away in the last decade.

As far as the work being done, the facade has been painted and it was starting to peel fairly badly. I guess it’s just time for a strip and paint job. Oh, and you can see some bad cracks and crumbling here and there that needs to be fixed (just under the north window and on the corner at eye-level).

As a neighbor who walks by every day I’d hope that they leave it unpainted, but I see that there are a number of mismatched bricks used for repairs — I suspect they’ll paint it again.
