Closing Bell: Caped in Fort Greene
This news has gotten around plenty, but NBC has dressed the city’s statues in capes to promote the upcoming television show “The Cape.” This weekend we spotted one in Fort Greene. You can check out this interactive map to get the history on the outfitted statues.

I’ll clean those statues for a mere $120,000.00 each–
capes included!
Where do I sign up?
still 120k more than they had without the hoopla. at the margin still a good deal for this broke city.
now if they were really slick whory admen they would have invented a tabloid controversy in the daily news about why they left capes off the female statues.
where’s my take for clicking into this dreck?
Sing it, g man.
First they gave him another shot on radio and now they’ve already put up a statue for Ted Williams?
Nice that these statues have some decent outerwear to get them through this cold and snowy weather!
Pricey? Not in my opinion. I think the number was $120,000, which is about the cost of cleaning and refinishing a single statue in a park. I guess you have to congratulate whatever ad firm thought this up, because it was a successful PR campaign. As for the city, it’s one thing to whore yourself out, it is quite another to be a cheap whore.
If NBC can manage to coordinate that, do you think they could also take over trash pick up? The pile in front of our house is starting to look like a permanent installation.
NBC gave out some pricey donations to the city (hopefully towards parks) so they could drape the capes on them. I have no qualms with it. It brings attention to often under-appreciated statues and of course, gives them a little bit of a lively touch.
