A tipster told us that an espresso bar is coming into the storefront at 324 7th Avenue, next to the Smiling Pizza Storefront. They say it will be an “Italian crepe and espresso bar” with the classic Italian marble bar for stand-up espresso, which will be of the Illy variety. Dunno when they’ll be open, but right now they even have Italian newspaper up on the windows!

  1. I hate to say it but Almondine ate into Zana’s biz (who was there before). I love the idea of a coffee bar like, this but for what its worth, Zana was not bad. Is it the same people?

  2. espresso is always a good thing! and to get some good stuff you have to go south of 9th to cafe grumpy.

hopefully they can get the concept of the espresso bar thing down, somehow it never feels like italy (maybe with the exception of cafe colombe in tribeca)

  3. Oh did the little bakery next to Smiling go under?
italian crepes – never heard of them – but thats cool
I just hope it doesn’t eat into Almondine’s business

  4. I can totally get behind this. When I was traveling in Italy I loved the espresso bars. Even when we were going through the mountains we could stop at a gas station and people were standing up at the bar having their espressos and talking nonsense. Perfect for my walk to the subway in the morning.
