Atlantic Yards foes aren’t crying uncle yet. A lawyer representing a group of Prospect Heights residents and businesses (Daniel Goldstein and Freddy’s Bar and Backroom among them) challenging the use of eminent domain for Atlantic Yards will argue before an appeals court in Manhattan this morning. The plaintiffs are appealing a federal judge’s dismissal of their lawsuit in June, claiming that any “public purposes [of the project] are pretextual and that the real purpose of a taking is to benefit a private developer.” According to Candace Carponter, the head of Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn’s legal team, if the plaintiffs are successful in their appeal they’ll be guaranteed a trial at the district court level. A separate Atlantic Yards lawsuit that’s looking to annul the project’s final Environmental Impact Statement is also still in the works.

If the people who lived in the area had not been bought out, their actual investment in the neighborhood would have long cleaned it up. However, both rich and poor have been bullied out of the neighborhood. They were the risk takers, but you insist on calling them names like Nimby. They moved in when you wouldn’t.

Once again, 12:29/10:29/10:32/9:10/9:57/10:07 typify the AY opposition: rude, abrasive, and intolerant of viewpoints other than his/her own. The use of name calling (“jerk”, “dip shit” and “prick”) also demonstrates a lack of class and poor temper control. They feel “nothing good ever came out of being polite,” which flies in the face of theories espoused by great leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King and Mohandas Ghandi. As an African-American, I do NOT support the statements of Mr. Goldstein and in fact believe he doesn’t have any right to speak on behalf of black people. Strident, intolerant, profane. It’s no wonder the opposition has failed so miserably.
Bruce Ratner is a real man of the people..how come he never shows up anywhere? Do you think this guy has any interest in housing the poor people of this city? Organizations of one person don’t raise money, nor do they have walk a thons that actually have people attend.
But frankly we still don’t see how the “opposition” which for the gazillionth time is made up of thousands of citizens not one spokes person ( but we know you can’t seem to grasp that concept)…..so we still dont’ understand this failed miserably part.
And if we failed so misearably why do you insist on posting to the wind? Shouldn’t you be out commenting on something that actually mattered? That is great conviction.

Just as Patti Hagan, one of the most outspoken critics of AY, tried to block a homeless shelter in PH, only to turn around and use the shelter residents in an attempt to further her AY opposition? Now that’s a sincere community role model!
