The apartments, which span three boroughs, are mostly prewar and all are renovated and appear to be in good condition. Most have one bathroom (one has 1.5 baths), and some have endearing details such as built-in shelves, a decorative fireplace, or a bay window.
In Brooklyn, the picks are in Greenpoint, Flatbush and Bed Stuy. Our Manhattan unit is on the Upper West Side, and in Queens, we found digs in Jackson Heights.
Which one would you choose?
First up is a duplex in Greenpoint. The unit has 1.5 bathrooms, hardwood floors, central air and storage space on the lower level. Although the common space has no windows, according to the floor plan, an appealing feature is a private, fenced-in patio.

Back in Brooklyn we have a newly renovated unit in a big 19th-century mixed use corner building in Bed Stuy. The no-fee apartment has high ceilings, exposed brick, hardwood floors, and a bay window. The building’s elaborate exterior brick details are typical of the work of noted 19th century architect Amzi Hill. It is around the corner from a playground and about five blocks from the Gates Avenue stop on the J and Z trains.
