Brooklyn Open Houses -- Bed Stuy, Clinton Hill, East Flatbush

Brownstoner readers were not looking for deals this week — of 10 most popular listings of the week, only one is listed for under a million dollars, and two are on the market for over $10 million. With an unlimited budget, which would you choose?

10. If it’s grandeur and opulence you’re after, look no further than this palatial Romanesque Revival brownstone, at 838 Carroll Street in Park Slope. Dubbed the Remington House, after the initial owner, who commissioned the house from architect C.P.H. Gilbert in the late 1880s, it’s got rich detail, acres of space, architectural distinction, a curved bay tower, and a price tag of $15 million.

9. On Marlborough Road in Prospect Park South we’ve got a formidable contender, a beautifully renovated three-story Victorian that was No. 4 on last week’s list. “You will not find many homes in Brooklyn more generous in size,” reads the listing, and that seems a fair estimation. It’s got five bedrooms, 3.5 baths, six walk-in closets, 44 windows and a two-car garage. Also upgraded plumbing and electric, zoned A/C and heat, and a new security system. An extra-appealing kitchen, a lovely sun room — a lot to like here.

8. This brick townhouse, at 16 Butler Street in Cobble Hill, might look ordinary at first glance but its age and style are unusual. It could be one of the oldest structures in Cobble Hill, and it’s received an eclectic redesign by an architect that mixes period detail and modern updates.

7. This three-story, three-family, corner brick townhouse at 208 Luquer Street is in Carroll Gardens, neighboring Gowanus. The home is currently set up as a two-family with the main floor as a one-bedroom rental. The owner’s upper duplex features a living room, a large eat-in kitchen, a terrace, three bedrooms, and one full bath. The one-bedroom main floor also includes a full bath, eat-in kitchen, living room, and plenty of closet space.

6. Don’t let the listing’s “carriage house” label give you the impression that 323 Pacific Street is old or quaint. Yes, the look of this decked-out home was inspired by 19th-century stables, but with a whopping 5,895 square feet of space, this newly built townhouse is vastly larger and dramatically more luxurious than the area’s average historic horse home.

5. Last week’s No. 1, down a few notches from last week, is in Prospect Park South, a three-story, three-unit freestanding Victorian, sited at 1011 Beverley Road, just off Coney Island Avenue. This one needs work, and it’s being pitched toward investors/developers as well as potential owner-occupants — the listing cites “approximately 10,500 buildable feet.” The few pictures reveal vast spaces and lots of intact original detail, including beamed ceilings, stained glass, and inlaid parquet floors.

4. On East 49th Street in East Flatbush stands a small, semi-detached one-family. A three-bedroom, this one offers two stories and a finished basement — which includes a second kitchen — and a pair of garages. It’s all redone, with new floors, new baths and kitchens. Not much detail to speak of, but there’s an early 20th-century fireplace in painted brick.

3. On Greene Avenue in Bed Stuy we’ve got a nicer-than-average flip, a two-family that’s been gutted top to bottom. It’s got an owner’s triplex with a full-floor master suite (with a balcony out front), a pair of smaller bedrooms, and an open-plan parlor floor with a nicely done kitchen. Note the parlor floor’s built-in shelving scheme, flanked by brick — distinctive and a bit unusual.

2. On Hancock Street is what appears to be a flip, newly redone with an owner’s three-bedroom duplex featuring the de rigueur open-plan living space, a garden rental and a finished basement. This one’s pretty nice as well — less modern and a bit more traditional than the previous one, with a few decorative fireplaces and dark woodwork in period style. It’s got central A/C and a built-in speaker system.

1. Our No. 1 pick this week, on Lafayette Avenue in Clinton Hill, is a four-story, bay-windowed brick number, with a two-bedroom owner’s duplex and a pair of floor-through apartments on top. Any original details seem to have been obliterated, judging by the photos, though it’s possible some are retained on the parlor floor, which, oddly, doesn’t seem to be pictured. (Nor is the small, garden-level kitchen.) Electric and mechanicals have been upgraded.
