This Sunday is likely the final Indonesian food bazaar of the season in Astoria

The Indonesian food bazaar at the Mosque Al-Hikmah has become legendary in the local food community. They really do make some of the best Indonesian food you’ll find in Queens, if not all of NYC. These bazaars are essentially fundraisers for the mosque, and the food there is all homemade by members.

The hardest part about these events, though, is knowing when they happen. They are scheduled usually once a month (during Ramadan there are no bazaars) but not in any regular pattern. Most often you’ll accidentally catch the info off of Chowhound, or on another local message board, so we are here to help you out with the info for the October 7 food bazaar.

Here is the information from the mosque’s mailing list, via Chowhound (yes, we keep an eye out there). This is a rough translation from the orignal language:

And here we are, letting our QNYC friends and community know! We can’t tell you enough just how good the food is. There’s food for both vegetarians and omnivores, too. Skewered meats are delicious, the iced coffee is amazing, and the gado gado is good, too. There are many more tasty things to choose from, too. The food is offered outside behind the mosque, and it is not a huge space, so be prepared for some level of crowds. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to sit down at the line of tables in the middle of the space.

“Masjid Al Hikmah” means “The Wisdom Mosque,” a term taken from the Qur’an. According to the mosque’s website, “from the beginning, Masjid Al-Hikmah has been engaged in community services, although in general the social services are aimed at Muslims, particularly, of course, Indonesian Muslims in New York…. [it] is also engaged in social services such as a place to have wedding ceremony, interfaith dialogues, bazaar, as well as a place where the jamaah can perform ghaib prayer – payers for those who have died in distant places.”
