We just got this photo in from a reader, who says the spire on St. Augustine’s Church “might fall.” The landmark church is on 6th Avenue between Sterling and Park Place. Anyone have more details about this? GMAP

  1. The only thing that DOB contractors do is demolish. If they remove the fleche rather than repair it, they will leave a big hole in the crossing and nothing will ever go back. WHERE IS THE LANDMARKS COMMISSION? HELLO??

  2. It looks perfectly intact it just needs to be re-anchored. Hopefully the crane will merely adjust it so the anchors can be tightened. I hope they don’t try to remove it. That could wreck it.

  3. During the strong winds yesterday afternoon, the flèche was visibly swaying, at least three or four feet from its center. I’m surprised it lasted through the night.

St Augustine’s is a remarkably beautiful and intact church (look at that tile roof!) and it would be a terrible blow to Brooklyn to have it damaged.

Does anyone know how they are planning to deal with the problem?

  4. It’s actually called a “fleche” and why do they think it is gong to fall?
Not obvious from the photo. Maybe it is leaning a little? I wouldn’t panic.
