The snow is beautiful. That said, I have a question about what is best to to do protect our lawn. I assume I have 2 decent options

1. leave as is, dont walk on it or disturb it assuming that the snow will transmit enough light to the grass to keep it alive and might actually give it an insulating layer. I am guessing that walking on it / depressing the snow to compacted ice on the grass will kill the grass.

2. shovel / rake the snow off the lawn completely – a huge job but not impossible. This would give most light to the grass and prevent it getting locked in ice.

What is the best option? Should I do something altogether different or is it to late to protect it or is it a lost cause regardless.

Enjoying the snow but looking forward to green grass in spring!

To answer your question seriously, yes leave it alone. The snow will prevent the lawn from getting dried out and windburnt.

Assuming you live in Brooklyn and you are talking about your typical 30′ to 40′ deep backyard turf, ypu need look no further than Prospect Park for a good example.
Basically winter lawn care is all about fall maintenance.
Rake up dead leaves and debris. Cut the grass regularly, gradually lowering the mower’s blade as winter approaches. Thatch if necessary. Fertilize. Even drop some seed on those thin spots.
Now that it’s winter there is nothing to do but wait for spring.

  2. Hey, bxgrl, I wasn’t OMG’ding about you. I kill stuff too and it is possible that this Forum request about the effect of snow on lawns is for real, but I wonder. These days there isn’t so much renovating going on because of the financial tsunami which has hit almost everyone, so there is less of the practical sharing of nitty gritty information that I used to love about the Forum (and I actually think more of the bored troll types these days, like the person posting for a person to change his/her ightbulbs.), so the OMG was a bit of a lament. Right now, I am trying to keep a alive in my house a couple of gorgeous ferns, which exploded in size over the wet summer/fall in my backyard and now are starting to drop leaves on the floor, so we’ll see. Have a great holiday.

  3. donatella- in my family I am known as “the Black thumb”. Never met a plant I couldn’t kill – I know very little about lawn care and have heard people talk about how this, that and the other affects the soil so that the next year nothing grows, or everything grows bigger than Jack’s beanstalk. I mean- aren’t lawns supposed to be that shade of brown? 🙂

  4. No wonder people say they will never ask for advice here. Personal insults, stupid political comments, – apologies to OP. For the record- having never had a lawn either- I would have asked too.

  5. The chicken we hear you. Too many angry and unhappy people in our great city. Poster asked a very benign albeit naive question and the frownstoner crowd just went nuts. Some of the responses are frankly just mean spirited….vraiment dommage!
