The fears of the neighborhood old-timers, who for years blocked the restoration of McCarren Park Pool because of concerns about violence, are proving prescient. As already reported, teenagers attacked a lifeguard on Friday (the day after the WPA-era pool reopened) and now, report both The Times and the Daily News, three young men were arrested yesterday after they ignored instructions to stop running and diving in shallow waters and, in the case of one of the youths, proceeded to punch a police officer. Appalling.

  1. Brooklyn can never have anything nice cause of ignorant misbehaved kids nowadays. Parents just don’t raise there children right anymore.

  2. I was there for the first incident, and really I just didn’t think it was that scary or that big of a deal. There was a lot of pent up excitement in the air such that I wasn’t surprised when a fight broke out. But I never felt scared or fearful. It just reminded me of my high school days.

  3. Actually i like all the rules
They are not making the rules to torture people, there are good reasons behind every rule
Mesh lining in shorts is to keep the pool from filling up with pubic hair
Larger locks are required because the small luggage locks are easy to rip open (as happened in McCarren pool already !)
I appreciate that the staff was trying to get the patrons to stick to the rules

The constant blowing of whistles is annoying – not sure how to get around that – maybe make the rules clearer to patrons so the lifeguards don’t have to blow the whistle and talk to every patron who jumps in the pool – clearer signs outside the pool for you to read as you are waiting in line, signs in the locker area for you to read while you are preparing to enter the pool area, clearer signs around the pool area itself – when patrons know the rules the lifeguards won’t have to blow the whistle as much
