A tipster sent in these photos with word that it looks like a Fedders building is going up between two brownstones on an architecturally significant block at 353 Jefferson Avenue in Bed Stuy. The otherwise intact block between Tompkins and Throop has homes designed by some of Brooklyn’s most luminous 19th century architects, including the Parfitt Brothers, Amzi Hill, Axel Hedman and Isaac Reynolds.

The block is part of the proposed Stuyvesant West landmark district, and at one time was home to two state senators. “Landmarking in the neighborhood is not happening soon enough,” said our tipster. “I think we are in a bit of a jam until the mayor appoints the new commissioner” for the Landmarks Preservation Commission, he added. Update: The building will be a four-family with four stories, according to permits.

  1. How much money is actually saved by having wall-mounted Fedders units instead central air? As I understand it, installing central air in a gut renovation costs about 100k, but in new construction wouldn’t it be much cheaper?
Besides, does anyone actually use the Fedders units?

  2. Developers are just clueless, dumb and disrespectful If this developer was smart and looked at the whole picture he would make much more money if he designed this building in context.. The scale already looks like it going to be off judging from the floor heights. This is going to be the I don’t give a care building on the block. Shame on this owner!

    • Well said Amzi!
They are probably going to mask the façade with old bricks (like we’ve seem now in many frame houses around bed-stuy), and will just look stupid…
Why not spend just a little more, and have a much bigger return? But I guess I know the answer.

  3. The land marking in Bedford Stuyvesant is NOT “resting” in front of various community board committees. Stuyvesant Expansion was designated August 22, 2013. Bedford has been calendared and the Stuyvesant Expansion East is next to be calendared.

This location is outside the Bedford designated area; however, I would check to see if it is in the Stuyvesant Expansion area.
