As Brooklyn grows, Downtown and neighboring areas as far as Red Hook need better transportation and traffic calming measures to deal with congestion and safety, especially now that Barclays Center has opened, according to a report that came out this week. The Brooklyn Gateway Transportation Vision document was authored by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, the Office of New York City Council Member Letitia James, and various associations of neighborhoods near Barclays, including the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council, Park Slope Civic Council and Boerum Hill Association. Recommendations include better bus service in the Downtown area, bridge tolls, permit parking near the arena, widened curbs near the arena, bike sharing stations, bike lanes on Flatbush and Atlantic avenues, and 20-mile-per-hour slow zones in Prospect Heights and Park Slope. The report also called for Forest City Ratner to pay for increased public transit service on arena event days. The Department of Transportation said it would review the report and is “happy to work with this group on transportation improvements in the area,” the New York Post said.
