Williamsburg’s volunteer-based Spectacle Theater has started a Kickstarter to help it stay at its South 3rd Street location under a new, more expensive lease.
A collectively run showroom housed in a former bodega, Spectacle charges patrons $5 to view eclectic and often forgotten films, and the group wants to keep tickets at an affordable rate.
“These days the artists have given way to cookie-cutter boutiques and luxury coffee shops,” the small movie house says of its neighbors in a promotion video on its Kickstarter page.
As of this writing, the 30-seat microcinema is already more than two-thirds of the way to its $35,000 goal.
Backers of the campaign will receive varying gifts depending on the size of their donation. Those who donate $5,000 or more will receive a lifetime membership, and Spectacle will paint the donor’s portrait. The backer will also get to throw a private birthday movie night at the theater.
