Laundromat Art Festival Bed Stuy 2015

A tri-borough local arts festival is showcasing Bed Stuy artists and laundromats this Sunday, September 20, from 1-5 p.m.

As part of its annual Field Day festival, arts organization the Laundromat Project will offer open studio visits, free art workshops, public programs and “creative walks” led by area residents — and all based around local laundromats.

The Marmy Laundromat at 197 Malcolm X Boulevard will feature a community art workshop, where festivalgoers can create personalized stamps and stationary. Three locations, including a community garden at 462 Halsey Street, will be celebrating Bed Stuy’s resilience through a series of interactive activities and story sharing. As well, a photograph installation called “Griots in ‘The Stuy'” will be open to public viewing along Tompkins Avenue, with artist Rasu Jilani on hand tell stories about the neighborhood.

Booklets and maps listing the complete Bed Stuy itinerary are available at the Laundromat Project’s various featured locations, according to the organization’s website.
