Did anyone catch this essay in The New York Daily News, called “Goodbye, My Bed Stuy”? The writer, a black man who grew up in Bed Stuy and is a journalism professor at Brooklyn College, laments the growing number of whites moving into Bed Stuy and the rising rents, which are pricing out longtime black renters in the neighborhood.

He mentions that Bed Stuy is mostly townhouses, which means most units aren’t rent regulated. He also says part of the problem is investors who are purchasing homes “as bundles.” We haven’t heard of that, but we think he is referring to investors buying townhouses in the area to rent out. (Incidentally, a building he mentions as an example of landlord harassment is in Crown Heights, not Bed Stuy.)

What do you think of the essay?

  1. Granted this was an essay, but the Journalism Professor from Brooklyn College couldn’t cop to what he actually paid for coffee, so he lied to his neighbors and said $2 – even though he paid more. Apparently not aware enough of his situation to know he is part of the wave he was lamenting. Plus, he included many opinions as unsubstantiated ‘facts’. And included many other inaccuracies detailed in dozens of previous comments in this thread that, well, would give me pause if I was paying tuition to learn the craft of journalism at Bklyn College.

  2. I am a resident and have watched white people move into the neighborhood with very little effort to get to know their neighbors. They stick to the other whites in the neighborhood, they have even tried to start their own block association. I watch them greet each other and many times I have said good morning, or good afternoon to no avail. What is tragic is that my landlord has been in the neighborhood for a long time and so has the white neighbor next door, she did not even know who my landlady was. If you are moving into a community at least have respect for your neighbors. If we as New Yorkers want to pretend that race is a none issue than we are just as bad a those Midwesterners.

    • I’m a white male that has lived in Bed Stuy for a few years. I am very friendly to all of my neighbors, regardless of race. Everyone should be like me. 🙂

      • Also, all of my neighbors are very friendly with me and my family. I feel very lucky to live in such an accepting, family-friendly, safe, normal neighborhood.

This is what I hear in this article: “I want this. I deserve that.” You don’t deserve $h!t.
Figure out the game, and play to win. Black, white, or green, rich or poor, we are all dealt a different hand at birth. You’re responsibile for your own success and happiness, within societal constraints.
