More Bed Stuy news: The neighborhood is leading the population boom in Brooklyn we told you about yesterday, according to a story in The Daily News. “The area added about 20,000 fresh faces in the last decade as the white population grew six fold while the number of blacks dropped by 14.6 percent,” producing an increase of 19.4 percent in the area in total, said the Daily News. “It’s a majority white in the northwestern section of Bed-Stuy,” according to Community Board Three Chair Henry Butler. The story attributes the change to an influx of young, white hipsters, and while that may be the case, we’d like to add that open houses are also very full these days, with plenty of expectant couples and babies in tow. The population increase in Bed Stuy is not to be confused with the Hasidic baby boom next door in South Williamsburg, where the population grew 14.1 percent. Meanwhile, over in eastern and southern Brooklyn, immigrants from Bangladesh, China, and Ecuador are fueling a population explosion in East New York, Dyker Heights, Bensonhust and other neighborhoods. Some more numbers: The population of Bushwick grew 11.6 percent.
