Closing Bell: Pratt and Etsy Joining to Host Conference

A conference, hosted by both Etsy and Pratt Institute, is coming up in mid-March about the “future of consumption, new methods of production, alternative approaches to work, and more purposeful ways of doing business.” It’s called Hello Etsy and it will be held on Pratt’s campus from March 22 to 24. There’s a long list of speakers — including economist and author Jeremy Rifkin, author and former Wired Editor in Chief Chris Anderson, and Etsy CEO Chad Dickerson — as well as a number of hands-on workshops planned. There’s also a special $10 discount available for Brownstoner readers for the $85 ticket. Not to mention $10 from each ticket sold will go towards rebuilding Pratt’s main building, which was recently damaged in a fire. Buy your tickets right here using the promo code EtsyBrownstoner13.

  • Etsy is no longer about “hand-made by designers” and this says it all right here. They now support re-sellers of mass-production in China. Disappointing.

  • So Etsy gets to pocket $75 a head to indoctrinate the creative underemployed? Etsy has always been a catalyst for jokes, but at least it had some artistic respectability when it actually focused on handcrafted items instead of the glorified clearing house of mass-produced junk that is “handled” by people instead of “handcrafted.” Hopefully Pratt gets a decent check from the proceeds so they can provide space for actual artists to create.
