Here are more opportunities to donate or help in light of the recent hurricane. Please email us with any more events, drives, fundraisers, etc., happening in Brooklyn.

  • Here’s a heartbreaking story about what’s happening right now in Sheepshead Bay. The writer helped organize a children’s drive with the assistance of State Senate candidate Andrew Gounardes and Councilman Vincent Gentile. Drop off all gently used toys, books and children’s clothing to either 7321 15th Avenue in Dyker Heights or 351 87th Street in Bay Ridge. There are also cleanups scheduled in the area.
  • There will be a stoop sale this Saturday in Bed Stuy called “Boroughs without Borders,” in honor of the victims of Hurricane Sandy. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to the victims. It will take place Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 am to 5 pm at 525 Halsey Street (between Stuyvesant and Malcolm X).
  • Red Hook Initiative is coordinating and dispatching volunteers to where they are most needed in the neighborhood. Contact RHI at 718-858-6782, or show up to volunteer at their office, located at 767 Hicks Street. There is a particular need for volunteers with medical training. You can also make a donation here or drop supplies off at their office.
  • If anyone has the means of transporting materials to shelters (particularly those in south Brooklyn and the Rockaways), please be in touch with Council Member Steve Levin’s office by calling (718) 875-5200, emailing to stephenlevin9@yahoo.com, or by stopping by his office in person at 410 Atlantic Avenue.
  • The soon-to-be-gym at 45 Waverly Avenue in Clinton Hill is accepting Sandy relief donations. They will be receiving donations today until 6 pm, as well as over the weekend.
  • A member of the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance reports there is no food, electricity or sign of any response to the needs of the low-income residents of the Rockaways. There are people without food or electricity in the NYCHA houses and Ocean Village. Food and flashlights would be of assistance to the area around 113th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Please contact Jeanne DuPont at (917) 975-5623 if you can help.

  1. Is there an address or center in the rockaways? I think red hook has all the volunteers because people know where to go! I feel a bit lost an would love to help, just not sure where to go (without gas 🙁 I dropped off diapers, clothes etc at a shelter today – but I’d like to give my time as well…

  2. i heard red hook turned volunteers away. how crazy.

if anyone has extra time on their hands they should go to the rockaways, especially breezy point. that’s where the help is really needed.
