A tipster sent in this photo and wrote: “I didn’t go to the Jay-Z concerts, but went to see the Harlem Globetrotters on Sunday, Oct. 7. A friend who works at BAM had gotten some discount vouchers so we went mainly to check out the arena. We cut out early and took the stairs to exit the stadium. Because of the observed rush to finish the construction in time, I wasn’t surprised to see that the landing of the stairwell we were in already has major cracks in it and it is barely a week old!” But readers should not be alarmed. Cracks in a cement floor are common and not necessarily a sign of structural problems, just unsightly. Below, the full photo in context.

  1. Concrete shrinks a bit as it sets and cures. This is not a surprise, and it shouldn’t be alarming. As long as they use a good sealant (and from the sheen in the photo it looks like it is sealed) it should be fine. Of all the problems at the Barclay, this is the one they notice?
