The entirety of 816 Washington Avenue, at St. Johns Place, has been torn down after a three-alarm fire tore through the building two weekends ago. The four-story building was mostly vacant and undergoing renovations at the time the fire hit. Nearby businesses on Washington Avenue are still shuttered as the demolition process moves along.

  1. bkny: yes, I recall the photos of the firemen battling flames from inside the adjacent house, which had lost its cornice to the fire. But it wasn’t a total loss was it?
Is there any word on the street that other buildings will need to come down?

  2. wow, look at how the adjacent building’s walls were scorched.
I am impressed that the fire was contained to just the one building. Hopefully the adjacent row of bow-fronted walk-ups will be restored. They do not have landmark protection.
