Yesterday the Board of Standards and Appeals held yet another hearing on whether the Enrique Norten-designed 580 Carroll Street should get a variance. According to someone who attended the meeting—and, incidentally, very much opposes the developer’s request—it didn’t seem like the BSA was buying the developer’s story: “The BSA ended the hearing process today for 580 Carroll St. and will announce their decision on March 9th. Judging from their remarks and manner it was obvious that they found nothing of merit and substance in the developers’ presentations over the three hearings. They were in fact quite critical of the inadequate and off-putting way [the developers] attempted to made their case. An aide to Velmanette Montgomery, Jim Vogel, spoke against the application for variances as did Craig Hammerman, CB6’s general manager, as well as Michael Curtin, Brad Lander’s aide. It certainly looks bleak for Black House Development.” So there you have it: In a few weeks, the 580 Carroll-BSA saga will hopefully be put to rest.

  1. I really do not know what the designer was thinking, if even that. But a place with walls of glass should , I would think, look at something pretty, not the back yard of a tenement, or the street.

  2. omg thank you TOo cool! i was like wtf when i saw that BATHROOMS were the room that is exposed to the streetview in the full floor windows. wtf? maybe im crazy, but i cannot take a dump if i know people are watching. even if there were floor to ceiling blinds, id still be like gack i wouldnt be able to take one. it’s rude to the residents of the street too, bathrooms right there exposed, pumping out all that poo mist. So rude!

    *rob*

  3. The ugliest building I have ever seen.. It will be even uglier when the occupants put

window dressings and everyone will be different. God I hope they cover the windows,,

I would hate to watch them bath and walk around in their underwear. the people who buy these are going to be exhibitionists by nature. people close your children’s eyes when you walk by this aquarium,, nature may be the last thing they see inside these
glass bowls. I Just Dont Get It.

  4. I walked past it yesterday, Garfield side is almost right up to the street.
The Carroll Street side is set back a bit, but with walls of glass you are looking out at not really so pretty wood frame homes, not even Brownstones, plus the first view is that of the back of an old tenement.
I do not think I would really want walls of glass, it looks like you would be on a stage for all to see in. Then window coverings would be needed as the whole entire world could see right in, plus, how on Earth do you clean those windows from the outside.

The wood outside, again, it is an idea, but not for here.
I think Carroll Street between 4/5 is like a hodge podge of crap….

The building is I guess not terrible it is just the location that makes it totally out of contex with the neighborhood.

  5. I would hate to buy one of those units with the big glass walls overlooking the planned garden, only to have a wall of townhouses rise up there instead of the garden, which is what the developer is seeking a variance to do. At least with On Prospect Park, no one else’s window is 20 feet across from your fishbowl.

  6. DeLepp, GMAP it…..the view across the street ain’t much to look at, either. Frankly, that whole block ain’t much to look at. Maybe these community board people need to get a life.
