A reader let us know that a Stop Work Order had been posted on the construction site on Union between 4th and 5th avenues, and a scan of Dept. of Buildings records shows that the situation at 701 Union is quite grave indeed. The DOB is moving to revoke the developer’s new building permit for a 10-unit condo following what sounds like an ugly incident a couple weeks ago: “There was a construction accident at the above location, the balcony towards the back of the address fell and injured workers and have caused a lot of property damage at 703 Union St.” GMAP DOB P*Shark

  1. Not all developers are greedy bastards. There are small hard working developers trying to make a living. Unfortunately, these developers are NOT connected, don’t have the best contractors and being penalized by the system because they don’t know their way around the system. Should we be sorry for them? No, but we shouldn’t be criticizing just because they are “the developers.” They are creating value by developing the underdeveloped properties. Most of them are not flipping properties. Most of them purchase empty lots and build livable spaces. If those spaces are not needed, they wouldn’t be sold. simple logic…

There is a definite flaw in the DOB’s system. Most developers cooperate with the DOB and follow their directions 100%. When the DOB delays the process, we end up with abandoned construction sites for 5 years and that is not really “for” the neighborhood. Hope the DOB can get rid of its beaurocracy and start working as hard as the rest of us.
