A reader just checked in with the news of a subway vent and manhole explosion around midnight last night in the vicinity of 5th Avenue and President St. Residents rushed out to find police and fire fighters on the scene. The explosion seemed to originate in the subway vent manhole between Joe’s Shoe Repair and Moutarde on 5th Ave, and in a nearby manhole on President St. No one was hurt, and there did not seem to be any fire. Officials are still investigating, and if more info comes in, we’ll update. Update People also reported seeing blue flames in the open manhole. A small natural gas or methane build up, perhaps?

  1. Broccoli does this to me, but since I live on a higher floor, the POF (power of flatus) dissipates on its way to the manhole in front of my building.

Would investigate dietary habits of people living on lower floors in close proximity to that manhole. If someone is doing this on purpose, instead of directing POF towards an open window, this may result in the filing of charges for causing endangerement of the public…

  2. I used to live on that stretch of 5th Ave., and in 04′ and 05′ the same thing happened.

Probably very old, corroded wires beneath the streets.

  3. I’d say the streets are as annoyed as everyone else over the ridiculous rental/purchase prices in P.S. That manhole cover and subway vent staged a revolt. Take heed everyone! Take heed!
