360 Smith, Post-Controversy: Workaday on the Web

The condo development at 360 Smith Street, once the focal point for neighborhood concerns about rampant out-of-scale development, is now basically just another development site (see pic on jump). The only distinctive thing about the project is the website its developer has set up to give anyone who cares to know updates about construction progress. The latest one says that foundation work is happening: “Steel pipe piles will be installed in the ground along the west side of the site. These piles will be drilled into place using two drilling rigs, thus avoiding the noise and vibration normally associated with pile driving operations. Some truck loads of building materials will arrive at the site from time to time; and some debris will be removed in dumpsters from time to time.” Almost hard to believe this is the same job that over the past year made residents put signs up on their lawns decrying its height; inspired an anti-overdevelopment art installation; and contributed to the push for a zoning text amendment limiting building heights on some streets in Carroll Gardens.
