Not wasting any time (it’s been 28 years since the Woods first bought the former trolley factory but less than a month since they inked their deal with Shahn Andersen), work begins today on the conversion of the Broken Angel. To coincide with the first piece of scaffolding going up, we’re happy to announce that the Broken Angel reno blog, which Shahn has titled “An Angel Rises,” also launches today. Low income housing doesn’t instantly mean crime and bad people. The units that are going to be built on Qunicy will probably be well built, and will be administered by HPD. I know a lot of people that aren’t criminals that happen not to make a lot of money that would love to live there.
I wonder how the low income housing next door will affect pricing. Any idea Shaun? I also noticed another project down the street; know what’s going on there?
I love the building, too. But could Shahn or someone give us any idea how on earth it can be brought up to code adn still have its personality? As groovy as all that crazy stuff on top looks, it seems inconceivable to me that it could be shored up and condos added beneath it. Would love to hear even just a conceptual idea for the place. I noticed various contractors’ trucks parked adjacent to the property and a waste hauling truck backing in to the side gate yesterday at 9am, so indeed things are moving forward.
There was an amusing, sleepy large dog sitting in the passenger seat of one of the contractor’s trucks.
As I waited for the hauling truck to pivot its way in, the dog slowly turned with a droopy deadpan, John Houseman look (remember old Paper Chase series and old Smith Barney commercials?) then went back about his business of pondering his next nap.
I wonder what his (or her) name is.
Kudos to Mr. Woods, for being a very smart and canny dude, Shahn Andersen, for being a good guy, and Mr. B for getting the exclusive blog. This should be very interesting and educational.
Mr. Woods’ use of building materials as a sculptural medium is truly wonderful. I love the horizontal line of windows, which give the optical illusion of being crushed under the weight of the structure above. I’m sure that freaked the DOB, but is probably more stable than your average slumlord tenement, where they should be arresting people.
Looking forward to the progress in the coming months.
I think it is about 10k sq ft. if I remember correctly. That doesn’t include the addition that was put on top and that is being torn down.
Anyone know the total sqft of the building ?
We went through this last summer. Just ignore him. The earlier negative comment on this thread (which we deleted) came from the same IP address that, it turns, out has claimed to be at various times middle and lower class, male and female and, most unbelievably, for and against the views of lostinbrooklyn. That IP is now blocked (yes we know that’s an imperfect solution). Just stop talking about him/her and we’ll stay on the case. Thanks. Now, how about that Broken Angel?!?
Half the posts on this thread can be attributed to the same lowlife scum bucket troll who pops up on the PLG threads. What a loser. No one engage this miserably little twerp for the rest of the day. Eventually after a nice bath, warm bottle of milk and diaper change, he’ll fall asleep.
