A reader recently attempted to have their fireplace cleaned and were told that the amount of creosote build-up meant an additional service was needed. They use the fireplace in their co-op quite often and this is not the first time the chimney has been cleaned, although it has been over a year since the last sweep. The chimney sweeper suggested something they call a “chain wire” cleaning to get rid of the creosote and quoted a price of $1,200. The reader is unsure if this is a necessary expenditure but they do want a safe, working fireplace.

Please chime in with any advice.
