The Upstater: Our Favorites

Fridays at 11, the Upstater website brings you a selection of houses for rent in upstate New York. This week, we’re picking out our two favorites: a tiny cabin in Narrowsburg and an old lodge in Big Indian.

Narrowsburg, if you haven’t been, is a picturesque town on the Delaware River. It has a sweet little downtown (with some fancy shops and some not-so-fancy restaurants) and a supermarket and Internet access, which are no small things on this very rural and western edge of Sullivan County.

Big Indian is very rural and deep in the mountains, just off Route 28. Cell service is rare, though they do get Internet. It’s very beautiful and quiet, and a short drive to the relative civilization of Phoenicia.

On little Lake Erie in Narrowsburg (the other Lake Erie), this 528-square-foot cabin from a Sears kit was built — or maybe just delivered — in 1900.

We think it’s beautifully renovated, and within walking distance to town.

This is one of the most unusual and interesting places we’ve seen. Beautifully renovated and decorated, a “loft-like lodge,” with a 47-foot-by-34-foot great room, four bedrooms, two baths and 2,700 square feet. The porch is so wide and wonderful.

The price seems great to us, at $289,000, though the lot is not as big as some would hope to go with their lodge: 1.7 acres.
