The Upstater: Nightly Rentals

Fridays at 11, the Upstater website brings you a selection of homes north (and a bit east and west) of the city. This week: vacation rentals by the night, courtesy of the Upstater Classifieds section.

First up, this sweet cottage the owners are calling the Bearsville Retreat. It’s a compound of two houses — a two-bedroom main house and a one-bedroom guest house — with a bunch of amenities, including a heated saltwater pool and a hot tub.

Here’s more: “The guest house has a sun-filled, well-appointed open living room with wall of windows. In the summer keep it wide open to live outdoors.” In the winter,  it’s cozy with central heating plus a wood stove (wood is provided). The description continues, “Brand new kitchen, dishwasher and microwave, all stocked with the basics. Spa-like bathroom with a lovely deep tub and a skylight, relax while gazing at the stars. Sunny double bedroom.”

The main house has a woodsy open living room with fireplace, two bedrooms and one bathroom with a lovely deep tub. There’s a new kitchen with dishwasher and microwave that is stocked with basics. A sun room leads out to a patio with a dining table.

Rates are $150 to $300 a night, depending on the season and if you rent both pads. More on the Facebook page.

We haven’t been to this charming little a-frame in East Jewett ourselves, but we know the owner well, and can vouch for her style and integrity. It’s a three-bedroom on a “pretty mountain road,” as the ad says, “equidistant from skiing in Hunter and Windham, which are both about a twelve-minute drive away. It’s also close to a quiet, beautiful mountain lake used only by locals and the area abounds in great hiking, little restaurants and antique shops. The wraparound deck is perfect for alfresco dining and cocktails at dusk.”

The owner offers to help design a personalized itinerary for your stay. $200 a night.

We’ve driven by this beautiful brick Italianate in Germantown many times, and have always marveled at it. It’s called Schoolfield, and the owner has been lovingly restoring it for years (and chronicling it on his blog).

Prices are generally about $355 a night, or you can rent a room in the place for $120. Let us know what it’s like if you go!
