Fridays at 11, the Upstater website brings you a selection of homes within three hours north, and a bit east or west, of New York City. This week, in the wake of Sandy, we decided to hone in on Hudson, up the hill from the train station and hopefully on high enough ground to withstand some rising waters.
First on our list is this rather remarkable live/work neoclassical home, in walking distance from the train station. It’s been lovingly restored and decorated (home to a famous artist, the listing boasts), with “12-foot decorative ceilings, marbleized slate mantles, chestnut paneling, doors, shutters, and several large original bookcases.” And there are details like “bookshelves in the dining room became a china armoire and the walk-in vault is now a pantry.”
There’s a new HVAC system, and the house has three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and 2,600 square feet. A tiny city lot of .03 acres.

We honed homed in on 201 Allen Street because it has a pretty view and is a very, very short walk to the train station. For New Yorkers who want to live upstate, this oughta remind you of home in lots of ways, except for the price.
For $399,000, you can have this 2,287-square-foot townhouse — it’s listed as a two-bedroom, three-bath, but there’s a rec room-like space that must account for the square footage.
