Brownstoner Upstate: Delaware County Cabins

Delaware County is one of those places in upstate New York that seems farther away than it really is (less than three hours from Manhattan, although it’s really just a hair less than three hours), but feels a billion miles away from everything. For us, it falls into the category of “Really Getting Away From It All,” since it is located in the Southern Tier region of the Catskill Mountains, and yet, there’s stuff around. The town of Delhi is the county seat, and there’s a SUNY school there. It’s also got a walkable main street with enough amenities so that you don’t have to travel too terribly far for what you need. And for those who continue to think Delaware County is too remote, keep in mind that Margaretville is located in Delaware County. See? Not so far away, after all. The county is also a fun place to explore secluded cabins tucked away in the woods, so let’s do some of that, shall we?

This cabin in Franklin inspired our search of other cabins in Delaware County. It essentially nails the concept in every way: It’s handmade, rustic, eclectic, surrounded by natural gorgeousness, and there’s even a brook on the property. According to the listing, it’s currently rented. Lucky tenants. Beds: 3. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 1,360. Lot Size: 8 acres. Est. Taxes: $2,678.

It’s small, but it’s jammed-packed with features, particularly of the environmentally friendly variety. In fact, this cabin in Masonville boasts solar and wind power, not to mention what looks to be a composting toilet. Listing says “off the grid.” So tempting. So cheap. It’s about three hours from the GWB and walking distance to the Steam Mill State Park. Beds: 2. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 705. Lot Size: 7 acres. Est. Taxes: $1,207.

A two-fer cabin? So it would seem. These two cabins are on the same 61-acre property in Masonville, and we’re not sure which one we like better. Thankfully, whoever buys this property won’t have to choose. The main cabin is fairly large for a cabin at 1,200 square feet. We’re not sure how large the other cabin is, but it seems open and roomy from the photographs. It’s truly isolated, according to the map, located in a sea of trees. Beds: 2. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 1,200. Lot Size: 61 acres. Taxes: $3,862.

Cabin? Cottage? It’s a fine line. This is probably closer to a cottage than a cabin, but it’s still affordable and secluded, although Margaretville is just a few minutes away. No need to be concerned about flooding: It’s far from water. The interior is neat and simple, and there’s even an enclosed porch. Lot size is by far the smallest of any of the other properties listed above, just shy of an acre. Still, we think we could hide away quite nicely here. Beds: 2. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 550. Lot Size: .85 acre. Taxes: $3,468.
