Brownstoner Upstate: Coxsackie
Have we yet extolled the virtues of Coxsackie? Pretty sure we have, but we’re going to do it again, because it’s spring and you need an excuse to visit a new place. Coxsackie in Greene County, 30 minutes south of Albany, 10 minutes north of Catskill, and two hours and 35 minutes north of Brooklyn….

Have we yet extolled the virtues of Coxsackie? Pretty sure we have, but we’re going to do it again, because it’s spring and you need an excuse to visit a new place. Coxsackie in Greene County, 30 minutes south of Albany, 10 minutes north of Catskill, and two hours and 35 minutes north of Brooklyn. The riverfront town is known (to us, anyway) for great historical architecture, a nice waterfront park, and one of the best places around to find some good, affordable properties. Don’t let the weird name scare you away. One thing we will mention, though, is that it’s sleepy. Businesses have come and gone, but it’s poised, friends. Right on the cusp. Worth a car trip, no doubt about it.
This estate in West Coxsackie (outside of the village) is known as the Van Bergen/Warren Old Stone House. It was built in 1781 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. It still maintains all kinds of period details, like wide plank floors, high ceilings, original wood work, and seven fireplaces. The grounds are quite stately, as well, and nearly six acres in size. This is a big house, indeed. As for the suggestion in the listing that it could be a B&B, however, we think more bathrooms would be in order. Beds: 6. Baths: 4. Square Feet: 5,320. Lot Size: 5.9 acres. Est. Taxes: $10,721.

We nearly scrolled right past this house, because the exterior is all garage. But, we decided to take a look when we realized this is near Sleepy Hollow Lake and has lake, community pool, and basketball and tennis courts. The inside is surprisingly sharp, we like the color schemes, and it’s got some lofty ceilings. Located south of Coxsackie village, on the northern tip of Sleepy Hollow Lake. Beds: 3. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 1,467. Lot Size: .24 acres. Est. Taxes: $6,464.

Here’s the companion to the first property above: A carriage house, which may have been part of the Van Bergen/Warren property back in the day, but we’re not entire sure so don’t quote us. We love the windows and the rustic look of the exterior, and the interior is basically a big open space to do with what you will. Situated on 2.5 acres 3 miles north of Coxsackie village. Beds: 3. Beds: 2. Square Feet: 2,400. Lot Size: 2.5 acres.

And now we’re in the village proper, where Victorians abound. Here’s a stunner on a full village acre, walking distance to the waterfront. Where to begin? With wood floors, pressed tin (and very high) ceilings, pocket doors, bays of windows, intricate detailing on the staircase, and on and on. Includes a detached garage. Beds: 5. Baths: 2.5. Square Feet: 3,849. Lot Size: 1 acre. Est. Taxes: $7,578.

First listing is very pretty, until I realized that it overlooks the Thruway. No thanks, that’s not why someone would acquire a property upstate.
Yeah- it’s f-ing far
Ah yes, the multitudinous virtues of Coxsackie…
