New York’s solar landscape stands at a unique moment. With a new administration bound for Washington, change is coming. But while federal policies may shift, our state’s and city’s commitment to renewable energy remains rock solid, particularly due to Local Laws 92 and 94, which mandate sustainable roofing on new construction and major roof renovations. Local Law 97 sets emissions limits for large buildings and is one of the main drivers of the city’s progress towards carbon neutrality.

These local laws are firmly established and will continue driving solar adoption across the city, regardless of federal policy changes.

What has not changed? Property owners can access an unprecedented combination of incentives, potentially offsetting up to 75 percent of installation costs:

Federal level: 30 percent tax credit through the Inflation Reduction Act
• New York State: $5,000 tax credit
• NY-Sun Program: $0.20 per watt upfront rebate
• New York City: 20 percent property tax abatement over four years
Historic properties: Additional 20 percent tax credit (if eligible)

Our state’s bipartisan support drives continued innovation and economic growth, with cities like New York leading through ambitious sustainability targets and supportive legislation.

While local incentives stay stable, federal benefits may face future adjustments. This creates urgency for property owners to act while the full incentive package remains available. Whether owners are driven by environmental concerns, economic benefits, or enhancing their property value, the current local policy and incentives mean the time is now for going solar.
