Did you know that more than 80 million gallons of paint go unused annually in the United States? For NYC residents looking to dispose of leftover paint responsibly, there’s good news: PaintCare‘s recycling program is making it easier than ever to manage unused paint sustainably.

Since launching in New York State in 2022, PaintCare has collected more than 2 million gallons of paint and partnered with over 370 drop-off sites. “Our program ensures paint is reused, recycled into new paint, or disposed of properly to minimize environmental impact,” said Andrew Radin, New York State Program Manager for PaintCare.

Smart paint management tips:

  • Buy smart: Before purchasing, calculate exactly how much paint you need. “Most people simply buy more than necessary just to be covered,” noted Radin. “Using paint calculators or consulting professionals can help minimize waste and save money.”
  • Store properly: Leftover paint doesn’t have to go to waste. Clean the rim, seal the lid tightly, and store in a cool, dry place. Properly stored paint can last years, perfect for touch-ups or small projects.
  • Share and repurpose: Consider donating usable paint to local community centers, schools, theater groups, and artists.

When you can’t use or share leftover paint, PaintCare’s neighborhood drop-off sites offer a convenient solution. Hardware stores, retail locations, and government facilities throughout New York participate in the program.

“Unused paint doesn’t have to be wasted paint,” Radin emphasized. “If we work together and paint smarter, we can get the most out of every can while protecting our environment.”
