Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill Co-ops are seeing some of the highest sales volume in New York City. In just one of the development’s twelve towers, ten sales are already on the books from the last year alone, with the majority changing hands right around the $450k mark.
If you can see beyond the cramped and divided interiors of so many of the units in these 1940s-era towers and get in there with a major renovation, you can end up with more square feet (and style) than you’ll find almost anywhere else in NYC.
We followed five owners of apartments in the Clinton Hill Co-ops on the path to brand new home bliss. Though these neighbors share a street address, their renovation budgets and styles differed, and each found the right contractor for the project via Sweeten, the New York City–based site that matches homeowners with local design and construction experts for major renovations.
Bringing kitchen walls down and replacing orange parquet flooring can be the quickest route from a typical co-op interior to a gorgeous, light-filled home. Click through for stunning before and after photos of renovations completed by the Sweeten team.
In one high-floor apartment, the owners, a couple who work in graphic design and art, wanted unobstructed views through to their corner windows. They overhauled the kitchen and flooring in their one-bedroom to lighten and brighten all around. All-white cabinetry, butcher block counters, and de-saturated wood floors star in this Scandinavian-inspired renovation. For more photos, check out the full before and after.
For another couple with a similar layout, the apartment’s many doors and cramped little spaces hid a kitchen waiting to be united with an art-filled living room. Glossy white IKEA cabinets, an oversize island, and wide-plank hardwood floors set the stage for this stylish couple’s retro décor. Their bathroom also got a glam overhaul.
An art director at The Wall Street Journal took on her tiny kitchen after a few battles with flooding from an upstairs neighbor. We wouldn’t wish a leak on anyone, but if the end game means custom walnut millwork, luminous glass tile, and a polished stone countertop that doubles as a piece of art, sign us up!
