On Tuesday, September 23, Brooklyn SolarWorks’ “Going Solar” webinar dispensed to New York City homeowners the most recent wisdom surrounding the switch to solar power.
Check out the webinar here:
Business Development Manager Ryan O’Hara was on hand to explain what homeowners need to know. With more than five years of experience helping New Yorkers go solar, O’Hara understands the unique needs of city homeowners and how to make solar work in NYC’s urban landscape.
He spoke of the recent and proposed increases in electricity charges by Con Edison — an increase every year since 2020. “If you heat with electricity, you’re probably paying $400 to $600 a month on average,” he said. “But if you install solar and fit enough panels on your roof, you can bring that few-hundred-dollars-bill down to just the basic service fees. It’s pretty common for a person post solar to have a bill from $25 to $45 a month, and that’s all they pay to stay connected to the grid – they’re not paying for any of their energy use.”
One attendee asked how installing solar will affect their existing electrical system.
“Before we start our process, we do a roof evaluation and an electrical evaluation. We need to pass an inspection to get this all signed off and approved. We can interconnect solar into 100 amp service, but it depends on your panel and if you have enough space to tie in. If panel upgrades are required for solar, we would include that in our scope of work. A simple panel upgrade could range from $2,000 to $5,000. We want to provide you with the solution to go solar, and sometimes that means doing some electrical work to bring you up to code.”
