Urban Exteriors is:
I love details, and pay particular attention to them.
I have been making sawdust for 40 years, with experience in all phases of woodworking. The last 15 years, I have concentrated on landscape woodworking, including decks, arbors, pergolas, planters, fences, trash enclosures, and even a treehouse. I work mostly with Ipè, Mahogany, Cedar, and pressure treated southern yellow pine, but am not limited to those species. In the last few years, many of my clients have opted for hybrid decks...an iron substructure covered by wood. If you're interested in seeing the results, click here.
I'm not a typical contractor...I have only one assistant, and I focus on one job at a time. We show up on time, clean up. finish the project on schedule, and our finished product will exceed your expectations.
Getting older, I decided to partner up with Adam Seim, to infuse some young blood into Urban Exteriors. Adam Is a very skilled woodworker, with knowledge of many other trades. He shares my passion for woodworking and together, we have a synergy that I never had with any of my assistants. If possible, he is more obsessive compulsive about our projects than I am. He also has a passion for compassion, as we met when I started volunteering for Blissful Bedrooms, a local charity that renovates bedrooms for young people with disabilities. Over the course of a weekend, we turn bland bedrooms into exciting, themed rooms that become a great environment for the recipient. You'll never see Blissful Bedrooms on a reality show, but we quietly improve lives, one child at a time.
Adam is a Brooklyn resident...10 years in Crown Heights...and a family man, with a supportive wife, and 2 young children. He has a background in digital drafting, and studio systems integration, in addition to woodworking, so he's able to tackle projects that require a wide variety of skills. Adam is a great addition to Urban Exteriors, and when I retire, I know that I'm leaving the business in great hands.
We are also cabinet makers, and can design/build built-in bookcases, wall units, radiator covers, etc. We need some rainy day projects. I have a woodshop.
We'll customize the project to your needs and budget, and will help you with design, or work from your plans. I live in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, and work mostly in Brownstone Brooklyn. We will travel for the right project. We give free estimates, and will supply you with current references. We are also available for design and/or build consultations.

"We used Steve last year and could not be happier with his work. He started when he said he would, he finished when he said he would, he did what he said he would, and he took the time for a confab with our wacky architect about modifying the design. The work itself is terrific – all miscellaneous trades people who look at it are very impressed. One example (my favorite): instead of just boxing the drain pipe in one corner with straight cuts, Steve scribed in about 8 facets so the circular pipe is enclosed in a nearly circular cut. (Not so easy to do in hard stuff like Ipe, I think.) He likes to do quality work, and charges accordingly. (At his suggestion, he plugged all the counter sunk screws, so the surface is beautiful and smooth; we paid for it [and love it] but he suggested it.) Bottom line: great work at a fair price. By no means “inexpensive”. But fair. Feel free to email me if you want to know more."Sandy Mattingly
I'd recommend Steve at Urban Exteriors - he actually did a large built-in bookshelf for us, not a deck, but I'd hire him for a deck job in a minute (decks are his specialty). He's got a great attention to detail and is a nice guy, to boot. Check out his photos online...Brooklynian Reader
We just had a Ipe deck in installed by Steve at Urban Exteriors over our existing iron structure in our backyard. He was terrific to work with….clearly loves his craft and wants his clients to be happy. We are beyond pleased with the work he did and would highly recommend him to anyone looking to do any kind of wood working from deck to built ins.Brownstoner Reader
