"We had a truly exceptional experience working with Studio PHH Architects. Renovating a 250+ year old farmhouse that had been in our family for generations was a very daunting project. After speaking with multiple architects, Pierre Hoppenot was the only one who had a vision that exceeded all expectations for what we thought was possible with the house. With many small rooms, pantries, and hallways that can be common in old homes, the space felt totally underutilized. As a house that hosted large gatherings, the kitchen was very cramped and the maze of small rooms felt totally disconnected from the larger living spaces on the other side of the house. By opening up and reworking a variety of spaces, his plan transformed the oldest part of the farmhouse to become a light-filled, welcoming, warm environment that we had always dreamed of. We did not do any external building, yet anyone that spent time in the house before renovation now walks in and gasps at the amount of space and can not believe that we did not extend the house to be able to accomplish the final product. PHH helped us modernize the downstairs, including the kitchen, dining, living and entertaining spaces, while delicately balancing the aesthetic of the old, traditional farmhouse. From the beginning of our discussions until the final stages of the project, PHH's expertise has been invaluable. Given the age and wear of the house, there were a variety of structural considerations and complexities that had to be taken into account and PHH did so with ease. When unexpected issues arose, PHH worked directly with our contractor and sub-contractors to make sure a solution was found. Pierre and Marco went above and beyond to share advice on how to utilize the space and lighting/furniture suggestions to make our vision a reality. The PHH team's in-depth knowledge and appreciation for different materials helped guide our decision-making on everything from flooring and tile to lighting and hardware. Our favorite part of the house is the 200-year-old original pine floors that had centuries of damage, yet with PHH's guidance, we pulled them up, refinished them with a variety of creative methods, and relaid them and the outcome is absolutely gorgeous. Family homes bring with them a vast range of emotions. I was worried that in changing the house, I would lose the connection I felt with generations of my family. I'll never forget Pierre asking as he walked around, "what are some of the most meaningful elements of this house to your family?" That was a very special moment as I realized that PHH understood how deeply our memories and traditions were engrained in the house and that honoring that would be a key priority.
