Word Up

Word Up is a community bookshop in Northern Manhattan. Originally conceived of as a month-long “pop-up” shop, Word Up and its 100% volunteer-powered staff of local residents have sold and/or distributed thousands of books to individuals and organizations, hosted more than 200 performers (as of the end of September) on the shop’s stage through a rigorous events program, and provided neighbors with a regular, safe venue in which to gather, debate, and engage with others who live in the shop’s immediate environs, on the block, down the way, up the street, and around the corner.
