About

Brown’s Brewing Company opened in 1993 as the Brown & Moran Brewing Company at 417 River Street in downtown Troy, NY and was the first brewery restaurant in the Capital Region. In 1995, founder and company president Garrett Brown changed the name of the entity to the Troy Brewing Company, Inc., doing business as Troy Pub & Brewery until 2004, when he changed the trade name to Brown’s Brewing Company. Brown’s also built and operated Revolution Hall in the neighboring 421/423 and 425 River Street addresses. Brown’s began managing the Revolution Hall space as a private event venue in 2010 when the owner of the live music business ceased operations.

The historic buildings from 417 through 425 River Street are part of Troy’s iconic waterfront when it was a bustling Hudson River port known as “The Collar City” and made famous by “Uncle” Sam Wilson. In their early years, the buildings housed a grocery store, a woolen products retailer, a collar manufacturer and a moving and storage warehouse. Most recently, the primary Taproom bar and restaurant space at 417 River Street was the home of Snyder Printing until a massive fire gutted the building in the mid 1980’s.

Back in 1993, Garry and Kelly Brown had a vision to turn that abandoned 150 year-old warehouse on a then-blighted River Street in Troy into a fully operational craft brewpub. Renovating the space took three painstaking years to complete but the endeavor was well worth it as Brown’s Brewing Company became an instant success and continues to thrive to this day. Today, Brown’s Taproom is a social hub for the community and offers a menu that compliments the beer brewed on site. Brown's brew over 25 different styles of ales and lagers throughout the year and serve ten or more beers on tap at any one time.

Brown’s continues to grow its wholesale beer sales business and built the Walloomsac Brewery in Hoosick Falls, NY to meet the demand of this business. Named for the beautiful Walloomsac River on which it sits, the brewery is a full scale production facility and will eventually be able to brew up to 80,000 barrels of beer a year. Brown’s Walloomsac Brewery is the center of Brown’s brewing operations, servicing markets throughout the Northeast with bottled and kegged beer.

We’re proud to have earned a number of awards over the years, including TAP New York’s 2008 Matthew Vassar Cup for the Best Brewery in the Hudson Valley, as well as a Gold medal for our Pale Ale by the Culinary Institute of America. We also won prestigious World Beer Cup Gold and Silver Awards for our Oatmeal Stout and Whiskey Porter, respectively, and Metroland readers have consistently voted Brown’s Best Brewpub in the Capital Region since 2008.
