Frank Lynch, one of our favorite photo documentarians of Brooklyn’s architecture and neighborhoods, recently posted a photo of a tiny corner of the borough that we had never heard of: Harrison Alley. All we know about it is that it’s a private alley off Evans Street in Vinegar. Can anyone else tell us more about it? Is there just one house on the alley or more?

  1. The neighborhood of Vinegar Hill is indeed landmarked. Hudson Avenue, Gold Street as well as Front Street. Speaking as one of those people in one of those 1830 buildings, this neighborhood has had it’s share of gentrification. There is no more room for it.

  2. The eastern edge of Vinegar Hill is so primed for gentrification it’s not even funny. There are buildings over there from the 1830s fer cryin’ out loud. Does anyone know if those blocks are landmarked?

  3. My wife and I picked a bunch of mulberries from the tree a few months ago. Quite a nice area — guys bought the whole place a _long_ time ago and weathered the total 80s ghetto scene.

  4. I went to a party at this house last fall. They had the alley done up with candles along both sides. The alley leads to a building that has been converted to an apartment by several artists. From what I heard at the party, the building was once the garage/stable for the Admiral’s Mansion which is literally right next door. From the vantage point of this picture, the mansion is on the other side of the fence on the left hand side.
