Near Green-Wood Cemetery, this compact one-bedroom floor-through on the top floor of a circa 1900 brick house combines recent updates with original features.

The dwelling at 438 37th Street has a lot of curb appeal with the blue-painted original double entry doors popping against the orange brick. Adding to the picture are textured brown brick details, lintels with incised decorations, a pressed-metal cornice, and historic black ironwork.

It’s part of a row of 18 brown, orange, and cream brick houses with low stoops and square bays that overlooks an identical row of 20 across the leafy street and an elementary school to the rear. The group of 18 isn’t there on a map of 1899 but ads for rooms for rent in the row start popping up as early as 1902.

Despite the low stoop, No. 438 may have been built as a single-family originally, going by the floor plan and the ads for a room to let in a “private house.”

Inside are tin ceilings, moldings, two wood mantels with original tile, wood floors, a built-in wardrobe, and a hall closet. The main rooms appear to be painted a pale robin’s egg blue with cream moldings and ceilings.

The wood mantels are stained mahogany with tile in shades of brown and cream. The radiators are sleek new low-profile wall-mounted ones under windows.

In the living room, the windows facing the street are set into the square bay and framed by curved and chamfered plasterwork. Next to the fireplace is a set of built-in drawers, probably originally the base for a wardrobe.

Open to the living room, the new kitchen is demarcated by dark blue wall paint. The cupboards are light blue with a white stone counter and tile backsplash. There is a peninsula with a two-burner induction cooktop but no dishwasher. (If the kitchen has an oven, it is not visible in the listing.)

The bedroom is in the rear and has a picture rail in addition to the aforementioned built-in wardrobe and other original details.

En suite to the bedroom, the renovated bathroom has a modern look with a step-in shower with glass door, gray and beige tile, and a white sink with a dark wood base.

Utilities are included, and the apartment is “spacious, bright, and quiet,” according to the listing. The already renovated house changed hands in October to an LLC, which appears to be an individual rather than a real estate company.

The bottom duplex in the two-family appears to be a rental also, going by past listings.

An open house is set for Saturday, April 11 from 2 to 3:30. The unit is listed by the owner, not a broker.

The rent is priced at $3,000 a month. What do you think?
