im 4:17…
I live in park slope and even though I am in a relationship and share a small 1bed with my gf its still a great place to live. I however could not afford it if I didn’t live with her.
I do have friends that live throughout park slope and there are tons of bars and music venues. Union Hall, Southpaw, Issue Project Room and the Yard have a huge range of stuff and attract some great acts. Although the last two are in gowanus they are close enough to walk. The Bars also are good and have cheap beer (black sheep on 5th ave at bergen have pictures for $8 until 8pm every day.)
it also only takes me around 15-20min to get to grand st from the 7th ave stop and cab rides form the LES cost about 15 bucks. Im not saying its the greatest place to live and its not the cheapest but you can find a 3 bedroom for $2800-3200 relatively easy on 5th and for less on 4th ave. And if you live close to flatbush you have access to every subway you need. I know 3 groups of people who are doing just that.
I just moved to NY, today in fact, and Im looking for a rental place in the East Village, LES, or Williamsburg. Been following craigslist for a couple of weeks now and most low quality shares oscillate between $1250 and $1500.
Are these prices unreasonable? Whats a good price for new construction 2 bedroom? A studio?
Rents right next to the Graham stop are way high, but I don’t know anyone in the neighborhood (BQE-area Greenpoint/Burg) paying more than $1500 for two beds. These listings are insane. Go to one of the local brokers, there’s still 1-beds under 1200 bucks, even if you don’t speak Polish or Italian.
“$1300 for a share in Prospect Heights eight years ago.”
Wow, you were being seriously reamed.
You can find good deals on apartment shares in greenpoint but not in williamsburg. Williamsburg rents are just completely out of control. Also if you don’t mind living with a few people you can find a loft in greenpoint that is reasonable.
most 20 somethings want to live in williamsburg not park slope unless they are in a very serious relationship or, they are very serious. there is way way more to do in williamsburg. and it’s so close to the LES.
especially for people in the music biz or following the indie music scene. you can see a lot of bands without ever leaving williamsburg. also, small article in the Post today about Martin Scorcese’s daughter buying in williamsburg. it has a panache that is different from other brooklyn hoods.
personally, i have lived in both neighborhoods and williamsburg is just flat out more fun and convenient. i’m married in my 40’s with a kid, and i like williamsburg better too because of the fun factor.
if you don’t like to go out, then sure, PS is ok., but if you do, it’s an expensive cab ride home.
also, really, $1000? really? I was paying $1300 for a share in Prospect Heights eight years ago.
I know people who live in prime park slope who pay less than $1000 for shares. And for a large apartments as well.
I pay $1400 for a nice 2BR in greenpoint. These prices are crazy as is anyone willing to pay them.
2:19… i don’t know people paying less. i own, but there are a number of 20 something renters in my office. most living in williamsburg or greenpoint. 2 lived in the area and got priced out of their apt which was a makeshift 2 bedroom because the landlord jacked the rent $500 per month so that this maybe 600 sq foot place is now just under $3000 per month. both stayed in the area although i know for a fact that they are paying around $1300 each for just a share.
another friend pays about $2500 for a crappy one bedroom on bedford.
rent is very high right now. maybe some people are locked into rent control or a long term situation, but for many, it’s tough.
