We’ve been obsessed with the mosaic tile building on the corner of Adelphi and Greene since we first moved to the area. We’ve never gotten a satisfactory explanation of how or why the building came to be covered in thousands of mosaic tiles — one of the few examples of an interesting alteration of a brownstone facade in the pre-Landmark era. After years of vacate orders and tax liens, however, the building is finally on the market. We were unable to find any info on the Massey Knakal website but look forward to details emerging. 1. In reference to Jim’s post, I heard the owner sold the Greenhouse Condos land for over $4 million and used the money to pay the back taxes on the two buildings (54 & 40 Greene Avenue) to keep the operation a going concern.

  2. Before the building across Adelphi Street was converted to apartments, it was at one time the Adelphi Hospital. It too was covered in white tile and the smaller ex-brownstone was the nurses residence for the hospital. Long time ago now, but the lot at Carlton Avenue where the Greenehouse condos were built was owned by the same person as the old hospital building and I believe the “mosaic” building.
