A recent post on Joyce Cohen’s new blog, Hunt Grunt, drew our attention to the New Yorker’s latest Talk of the Town piece that continues its fascination with both Brooklyn and brownstones. The article documents the visit of Victorian Flatbush’s Queen Bee Mary Kay Gallagher and her book club to the recently renovated brownstone of author John Berendt. While the purpose of the evening was to discuss Berendt’s recent book, The City of Falling Angels (which we devoured over the holidays), like most social events, people’s attention inevitably shifted to a state of jealous voyeurism as they ended the evening with a tour of the well-appointed home.
Mr. Berendt’s Party [New Yorker]
The Place Is a Mess [Hunt Grunt]
Do you guys wear square glasses?
16 feet is great for house parties? For midgets?
I’ve been to John Berendt’s house. It’s a narrow (maybe 16 ft), turn-of-the-last-century place on the UWS. Very classy reno, if a little sterile. Best feature? An ultra-modern penthouse apt (clearly a later addition to the building) with deck and outside shower. Great for house guests or for a writer who needs to get away from it all.
Eh, cut ’em some slack. After all, we’ve seen first hand how a Talk of the Town piece can spin a situation. Loved the book though…
this is why I quit my book club. you read a book about venice and the “discussion” is someone telling you about their most recent trip to venice…. UGH!
these people sound awful!
