The planners of the proposed Brooklyn Bridge Park are presently looking into the possibility of a “vertical connection” between the Promenade and their proposed park. According to the Brooklyn Papers:
“Early in the long-awaited development’s planning process, a pedestrian bridge between the two public overlooks was nixed after project engineers estimated its cost at $15 million and some Heights residents complained that an influx of visitors could overwhelm the Promenade and bring more visitors onto Heights streets.”
Planners promise that anything they construct would fit in with the neighborhood’s historic look, and would be constrained by the Promenade’s landmark status, but members of the Brooklyn Heights Association are concered about “marring the landmark or obstructing the view.”

Anne, Squibb Park was going to be a connection between the Promenade and BBP, then it wasn’t, and now it appears to be back in the plans. This is probably a good location: little impact on the statuatory (not that ESDC cares about the Zoning Resolution) scenic view plan and the shortest distance to the A subway line from the proposed buildings in the central portion of the park.
My dad grew up on Willow Street and always remembered there was something called ‘Penny Bridge’. I imagined that connected to the waterfront. Perhaps this proposal would just be restoring what was there before Robert Moses came along?
A lovely little bridge would be a sweet thing. We live so close to the water in NY and yet it’s so difficult to access.
I think I’ll side with the Brooklyn Heights residents on this one. The CitySights bus is always driving tourists down near the site of the park for pictures of the skyline. Connecting the promenade is only going to encourage them to actually create a stop there and flood the location with more tourists. If they create anything like the vertical elevator at Niagara Falls (Canadian Side) I think I’ll puke.
Does anyone know what the plans might be for Squibb Park, across from Chapin Playground, between Cranberry and Middagh Sts? I thought that was going to “connect” the Promenade and BB Park…
