House of the Day: 45 Remsen Street
The listing copy for this Brooklyn Heights Italianate brownstone says the house was built in the late 1860s, but the black Greek Revival mantels and the two-room-deep layout (with extension) make us think it’s older. The listing copy for this Brooklyn Heights Italianate brownstone says the house was built in the late 1860s, but the black Greek Revival mantels and the two-room-deep layout (with extension) make us think it’s older. In any case, it’s clearly gone through a lot of re-dos over the years, and is chock-a-block with interesting 19th century detail and charm, including still-working pass-through sinks, built-in cabinetry, an octagonal dining room, and eight mantels. We’re gaga for the strong-shouldered Neo-Grec white marble one in the parlor (the clock above it is nice too). Located half a block from the promenade at 45 Remsen Street, the house is currently configured as an owner’s triplex with two floor-through rentals, one above and one below. The listing doesn’t mention the mechanicals, and there are no photos of kitchens or baths. Are you surprised by the ask of $6,850,000?

Looks beautiful. I think the top floor is more of an in-law apartment, not a rental. There’s no separate staircase.
The price is very 21st century but the layout is very 19th. The front two bedrooms on what’s listed as the third floor don’t have use of a bathroom on that level, for example. (If I’m reading the floorplan correctly. Looks like the bath on that level is ensuite to the rear bedroom.)
Everyone wants to sell their Brooklyn Heights house for $6 million & up these days. There have only been something like 10 houses ever to sell more than that in the neighborhood, and half of those were in the last 12 months…interesting times.
