House of the Day: 558 Third Street
Third Street is arguably the Slope’s grandest East-West street and limestone mansions like this single-family at Number 558 are the reason why. We’re aching to see some interior pics but have no reason to doubt the listing’s desciption of original “lovingly maintained” original details. (Throw us a bone with that “paneled formal dining room” though!)…

Anyhoozles, there was an open house yesterday, though we suspect that the $3,499,000 asking price puts the 4,400-square-foot shloss out of the range of most readers. Anyone go for the pure voyeurism of it all?

8 years ago is a long time ago. We had 27 and then at one time 30 in my son’s K class.
Just to add some facts to the 321 discussion… We sent 2 kids through 321 over the past 8 years. We never experienced a class with more than 22 kids in K through 2nd grade. Class size is increased s/what throughout 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades (i.e., while there are 8 Kindergartens, there are s/thing like 7 3rd grade classrooms, 6 4th grade classrooms, etc.). By 5th grade, my kids may have had 30 kids in their classes. People who talk about overcrowding in 321 have not experienced the extremely orderly and caring environment that is an everyday reality. Liz Phillips, the principal, is an incredible asset to the community.
great block but the interior doesnt give me that wow feeling… i guess they didnt want to show off thier yellow appliances in thier hoity toity home…. but i do hope some sucker buys I mean i hope this sucker sells.
Everyone done yet? No real buyer would even be here.
Dreamin,
Thats not MY line–I’ve always said I don’t like invidious comparisons–even when they happen to be true:-)
[Sorry–just couldn’t resist–Actually, I’ve always liked 3rd St, although I think Montgomery place and the park blocks of Carroll and President Streets are even grander]
reminds me of grandma and grandpa’s house, needs a fresh, young touch. of course that would be a millionaire’s fresh, young touch but still…and it would def. be private school if they are spending 3 plus mill on a house. 321 is way too overcrowded.
This house looks narrow to me. I think the thing with painted woodwork is that it is quite common while nice stained woodwork is a rare thing and really does add a lot of charactor to a period house and painted woodwork just can’t give the same warmth or sense of age. But painted is better than nothing I suppose.
So where are all the PLGers telling potential buyers of this crib that they are spending $2 mil too much when they could have a house just as great on Midwood? Same access to the Park, better subway access, etc. Prosper? Ed? Bob Marvin?

actually when i renovated my house in cobble hill Landmarks insisted that if i redid my front door i paint it, as opposed to the stain it had. they said originally the door would have been painted, not stained. those windows should also be 6 over 6 or 4 over 4. anything but one over one which looks cheap and is ugly in my opinion.
