The wall-to-wall carpeting in this new listing at 814 East 19th Street give the Midwood house a certain time capsule quality that will probably work against it on the sales market. And the exterior, while perfectly attractive, lacks some of the wow factor that other houses in the area have. Still, it’s quite an attractive house, and it probably won’t take much to bring those floors back to life. In the meantime, you’ve got a bunch of nice architectural details, a front and back yard and a garage to get you through the night. And an asking price with only six digits: $990,000.

Railings = Cringe-worthy.
This is not a particularly special house. More like sup-par. The exterior has been muddled with stucco and brick, little original detail in the interior, carpets perhaps masking hardwood floor issues (or not?). Needs new kitchens and bathrooms to boot, I’m betting, and who knows what state the mechanicals are in? Backyard needs a backhoe to rip up that nasty concrete. A bargain? Hardly think so.
That said, Fiske Terrace is a really peaceful and pretty neighborhood, if a million miles from Prospect Park and Cortelyou.
Yes, but it is right by Brooklyn College. Are houses out there one million dollars now? And, if so, what does that mean?
Rip up those carpets and this house is beautiful. What details. Are those the original light fixtures? They had gas well into the 1920s? Well, I suppose they may have.
Only in Kansas would this be considered a “middle class home.” Here in NYC, we call it a mansion. (I’m only semi-joking.)
No, what I mean is this house is quite large — it’s not some little Craftsman bungalow.
Of course, you can’t really tell without laying eyeballs on the place, but on a $/sqft basis, this price is not out of line.
Oh — and it’s in the Fiske Terrace Historical District. Greater Midwood, if you insist. Ditmas Park vic if you must.
“Don’t know why, but I’m still surprised — as only a kid from the suburbs of a college town in the Midwest can be — when a non-too-special, solidly middle-class home, in a solidly middle-class section of Brooklyn, is considered a bargain at jusssst a hair under a million bucks. I always do one of those cartoony, head-scrambling, double takes”
Right there with you, Noki.
I am also surprised that I’ve started referring to houses that are half that price as “cheap,” because, honestly, that is still a ton of money.
Pretty sure that is a typo. They meant to price it at $790.
No worries, that is what it will be when the leaves fall off the trees.
Unless the interiors and mechanicals are in mint condition, this is overpriced.
And Chelsea Vocational High School is in SoHo. Point being?
cry in a good, nostalgic-like way, or cry in a pained, cringing-like way, Architerrorist?
